Cambridge has a long, complex and rich history.  We’ve decided to cut that down to just 5 key events:

• 1209 – Founding of the University of Cambridge: Scholars fleeing Oxford established a new centre of learning in Cambridge, which grew into one of the world’s leading universities.
• 1446–1515 – Construction of King’s College Chapel: Commissioned by King Henry VI, this Gothic masterpiece became an enduring symbol of the University and the city.
• 1640s – The English Civil War: Cambridge served as a key Parliamentarian stronghold; troops were mustered here and Oliver Cromwell studied in the city.
• 17th–20th centuries – The Cambridge Scientific Revolution: Home to giants such as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Alan Turing, Cambridge reshaped global science and ideas.
• 1970 – Establishment of the Cambridge Science Park: Created by Trinity College, it catalysed the rise of “Silicon Fen,” a major hub for high-tech and biotechnology innovation.
