It’s impossible, of course, to truly experience all that Cambridge has to offer in one day. But if yo are making a flying visit, here’s our suggestion for an itinerary that packs in as many of the highlights as possible.  Enjoy!

Morning

• Start at the University of Cambridge: Begin your day early by exploring the historic colleges of the University of Cambridge. Many of the colleges open their gates to visitors in the morning. A good starting point is King’s College, renowned for its breath-taking chapel and Gothic architecture. If you’re there during term time, you might catch the choir practicing.
• Fitzwilliam Museum: After soaking in the architectural beauty, head over to the Fitzwilliam Museum. It’s one of the best art and antiquities museums in England, with collections that span centuries and continents. Entry is free.

Midday

• Punting on the Cam: No visit to Cambridge is complete without punting on the River Cam. This quintessential Cambridge activity offers a unique view of the city and its university buildings. You can hire a punt for a self-guided adventure or take a chauffeured tour.
• Lunch in the city: Cambridge boasts a variety of dining options. For a quick and satisfying lunch, try some local cafes and eateries around Market Square or venture into the Grafton area for more diverse options.

Afternoon

• Botanic Garden: Spend your early afternoon at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. It’s a 40-acre garden with over 8,000 plant species, offering a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
• Market Square: Mid-to-late afternoon, head back into the city centre to explore the Market Square. Depending on the day, you might find local crafts, artwork, food, and more. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs.

Evening

• Dinner and a stroll along the Backs: For dinner, choose one of Cambridge’s many restaurants offering everything from traditional British fare to international cuisine. After dinner, take a leisurely walk along the Backs for a stunning view of the colleges against the backdrop of the setting sun.
• Attend Evensong at King’s College Chapel: If your visit falls on a day when the chapel choir is performing Evensong, don’t miss it. The experience of the choir and the organ in the historic setting is unforgettable.
